Simple Tips to Help You Save Money This Winter | Richard Banks & Associates, P.C.
We’ve made it through the holiday season and straight into the depths of winter. If your bank account is still feeling the effects of buying all those Christmas gifts, you are probably searching for any way possible to pinch a few pennies.
Fortunately, there are some simple ways you can save money during the wintertime!
Where to Find Winter Savings
One of the first places you can start on your quest for winter savings is on the heat bill. We are lucky to live in an area where it doesn’t commonly reach frigid temperatures, but winters in the south can still be plenty cold!
When the temperatures drop, one of the first things you’ll notice is an increase in the utility bill. It costs money to crank up the thermostat, so here are some ideas to help you save on the energy bills:
1. Layer up on clothing. Dressing in layers can help keep you warm, and if things start to get a bit too hot, you can take a layer or two off. ‘Tis the season for hoodies and sweatpants!
2. Adjust the heat at night and when no one is home. You can move the thermostat down a few degrees and save a little on your heat bill.
3. Leave the oven door open after cooking. If you’ve used the oven, don’t miss out on the chance to let it heat up your home a bit. Once done, instead of closing the door, leave it open a bit for that heat to spill out.
4. Seal the windows. You can cover them with plastic to help eliminate drafts or caulk around cracks that are found in the seal. If you don’t have plastic to cover them, simply hanging a blanket over a window can help.
It is also wise to conduct an energy audit of your home. To do this, check the insulation, furnace filters and your electric use. Find air leaks in your home and have them sealed or repaired, unplug things you are not using, and consider setting timers on lights and TVs.
Outside of the utility bill, you can also work on cooking in large quantities to help cut down on your desire to order carryout or delivery.
Call it meal prepping or cooking in batches, but you can cook numerous things and then put them in the freezer to eat at a later time. Having food easily available will help you spend less money at restaurants.
The winter may freeze many things, but your finances don’t have to be included on that list thanks to tips like these. If you have reached a point where there seems to be no solution to your financial issues, consider speaking to the bankruptcy experts at Richard Banks & Associates.
